PulsePoint’s Trader Hall of Fame celebrates the industry leaders shaping the future of programmatic healthcare advertising. Each inductee shows their deep expertise in leveraging PulsePoint’s Life platform to deliver exceptional results for clients. Through their skill and dedication, inductees help ensure lifesaving treatments reach healthcare professionals and patients at the precise moments to drive meaningful outcomes.

This month, PulsePoint proudly welcomes Sam McMann, Associate of Programmatic at SSCG Media Group, into the Trader Hall of Fame.

In this article, you’ll get to know Sam’s journey into programmatic, the advice he offers to traders entering the field, and how he spends his time outside of the dashboard.

Sam’s path to programmatic advertising

Sam’s path to programmatic media wasn’t exactly one he dreamed up as a child or pursued in his collegiate studies. Instead, it was a strategic career pivot that ultimately became his specialty and superpower.

“I would have never, ever been able to tell you that I would have been in marketing, let alone in programmatic,” he explained with a laugh.

As a biology major in college and competitive swimmer during his youth, Sam originally thought he would become a scientist or coach. Although he spent some time running a swim club and coaching, he realized that he was ready for a career pivot. That shift led him into digital media, where he was introduced to programmatic advertising. He quickly found himself drawn to its unique mix of strategy, analytics, and execution.

“It was the demand for strategy, data analysis, and hands-on execution that really drew me in,” Sam said.

The more Sam immersed himself in the technical foundations of programmatic, learning DSP architecture, budget pacing, and campaign optimization, and took on the unique complexities of healthcare marketing, the more invested he became.

Now, Sam is responsible for leading programmatic strategy and execution for healthcare and pharmaceutical brands at SSCG Media Group, one of the top-rated agencies for healthcare, and has consistently delivered impactful, data-driven campaigns.

Sam’s favorite parts of his job in healthcare programmatic

Despite the intensity, Sam finds programmatic to be deeply rewarding because of its hands-on and cross-functional nature. In programmatic, traders are often involved in every stage of a campaign’s lifecycle, from strategy and development to implementation, execution, optimization, and final performance readouts. That end-to-end ownership, paired with its expansive reach and diverse targeting capabilities, creates room for both strategic creativity and precision.

The work may be demanding, he admits, “but the payoff is pretty satisfactory.”

Top advice for newcomers to the programmatic advertising field

For those just starting out in healthcare programmatic, Sam recommends a mindset shift to really understand the why, not just the where. Early in a trader’s career, much of the focus goes toward understanding platforms, including where the buttons live, what the terminology means, and how to navigate workflows. While that fluency is essential, Sam cautions against stopping there.

“It’s easy to get lost in trying to track it all and gain an understanding of the platform that you lose track of the why and how behind some of the levers, workflows, and processes,” he explains.

Sam also stresses the importance of mastering the fundamentals of pacing and budgeting early, as the ability to control spend efficiently and deliver results on budget builds trust and can open the door to managing larger, more complex portfolios.

Beyond the fundamentals, Sam also shares that it’s imperative to avoid siloing yourself in programmatic and instead understand how it fits into the broader media mix to support broader business goals.

What success looks like for Sam

For Sam, professional success ultimately boils down to being trusted.

“Success looks like being trusted with large, complex portfolios, being trusted to be a point of contact, and being trusted to be what I call a translator for programmatic,” he said.

Programmatic is a discipline that can often feel technical and confusing for those not entrenched in it daily, Sam explains. This means one of the greatest success metrics is being able to clearly articulate problems, solutions, performance insights, and optimization opportunities to clients in a language that resonates.

“Being trusted to break programmatic down into easy, understandable language, that’s success to me,” Sam said.

Personally, for Sam, success is about growth and the commitment to improving each year, embracing challenges, and learning from mistakes.

Sam approaches that growth and development with the same mindset he brings to programmatic campaigns: iterative and intentional. With a smile, he described it as “trying to revisit and see where you can optimize yourself.”

Sam’s PulsePoint Experience

Sam has worked with PulsePoint for years, and when asked about PulsePoint his first words were: “I love PulsePoint.”

For someone like Sam, who manages campaigns in the pharma and healthcare space, PulsePoint’s specialization is what makes the difference.

“The healthcare solutions PulsePoint offers are extremely apt and valuable to the work that I do and the problems that I’m trying to solve,” Sam said.

Specifically, solutions like HCP365 and Clinical Insights are staples in his day-to-day workflow, helping him optimize and drive results for campaigns designed to reach precise clinical audiences.

In addition to the healthcare-specific benefits, Sam also points to the balance PulsePoint strikes between power and usability.

“The platform is intuitive but powerful,” he explains, citing the robustness of its data and solutions alongside a UI/UX that supports efficient, large-scale execution.

He also notes that recent platform enhancements, like Adaptive Optimization and bulk deal group editing, have streamlined his workflows even further. Smaller features, such as customizable creative scheduling, accessible creative specs, and the ability to make edits across multiple dashboards, also make a meaningful impact, particularly in PMP-heavy activations with complex setup requirements.

“Just yesterday while building, those things were especially helpful,” he said, underscoring how deeply embedded the PulsePoint platform is in his everyday workflow.

Sam also shared a heartfelt thank you to the PulsePoint team members who played a meaningful role in his success. He expressed sincere appreciation for Nick Lucero, Jerry Nogueras, Sammy Ricca, Hailey Artega, and Malcolm Halle for their partnership, responsiveness, and collaboration over the years. From troubleshooting campaign nuances to exploring strategic opportunities and helping navigate complex healthcare executions, their support has been instrumental.

“Programmatic is never a solo effort,” Sam said. “The collaboration and expertise from the PulsePoint team have truly helped elevate the work.”

Sam’s Interests Outside of Programmatic

When he’s not at his computer buried in the fast-paced world of programmatic advertising, Sam can be found wandering in the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, often hopping on his bike for trail rides or just enjoying the scenery.

Sam was also a competitive swimmer growing up, so he spent much of his life in the pool, a foundation that still shapes him today. While he no longer swims as frequently as he once did, he continues to share that passion by teaching friends, family, and other young swimmers the fundamentals of water safety.

“Helping the future generations learn how to swim and be water safe is something I really value,” he said.

At home, Sam is, in his words, “a proud dad of two cats.” Though he jokes that they assist with pacing optimizations and monthly reconciliations, he admits their real specialty is plopping on his keyboard. Menaces, perhaps, but part of the balance that keeps life outside the dashboard just as full as the one within it.

Congratulations, Sam, on your induction into the PulsePoint Trader Hall of Fame. This is an honor that is well deserved.
