This month, PulsePoint is thrilled to welcome Jody Chang, digital advertising consultant with Vivus, to the Trader Hall of Fame.
Similar to many others in the industry, Jody didn’t set his sights on programmatic marketing right out of college. His career largely started in search engine marketing, where he spent years running campaigns on the agency side, where he also picked up social media marketing and got comfortable navigating self-service ad platforms.
The shift into programmatic happened almost by accident. While servicing his pharma client, there was a need for programmatic. The client turned to someone they already trusted.
"They basically came to me and said, hey, you're already doing our digital media, do you want to take this on as well?" Jody said.
He said yes, even without a programmatic background, leaning on his broader digital marketing experience. "I wanted to learn a new platform and better understand what the programmatic space is all about," Jody said.
Ask Jody what he loves most about his work, and the answer comes quickly: pulling levers and optimizing campaigns.
"What I love about programmatic and digital in general is the ability to immediately see what your actions are doing, the assets that are being utilized, and how it's being received by people," he said.
That immediacy is what sets digital apart from more traditional channels, in his view. With something like television advertising, you're left wondering how many eyeballs actually saw the ad. Programmatic, by contrast, gives him a constant stream of real-time data to work from.
"You get a lot more details on the actions and the metrics," Jody said.
When asked what advice he'd give to someone just starting out in programmatic, Jody pointed first to the value of broader digital advertising exposure. "Being exposed to other parts of the advertising landscape is actually very useful and very helpful," he said, reflecting on how his own background in search engine marketing and social media marketing made the transition into programmatic feel natural rather than intimidating.
But pressed on what to tell someone with no programmatic background at all, his advice got simpler: don't overthink it.
"Just dive right in, don’t be afraid to try something new. You’ll just continue learning and growing.” Jody said.
Jody explains that there are two things that set PulsePoint apart, the dedicated team and the data. On the people side, Jody explains that "What separates one platform from another is the kind of support that you get from the team, and PulsePoint's team is amazing."
On the platform itself, Jody's favorite features all come back to data. He pointed to the granular clinical dashboards that surface insights down to the doctor level.
"Understanding the actual doctors that are performing actions, I think that's very helpful and very useful information to share with the client if they want to provide that to their sales reps who are in the field," he said.
As a self-described "big data person," he's drawn to the real-time visuals: bar charts, geographic heat maps, and week-over-week script lift comparisons.
"These types of data points for me are what I like the most, and certainly want to see more of that as well," he said, noting that PulsePoint's continued investment in new reporting visuals has already made a difference.
For Jody, the best piece of advice he's ever received boils down to one principle: ask questions, no matter what.
"If you don't know something, ask a question. Start a conversation with someone, because that can lead to maybe another conversation somewhere else," he said. It's a habit he credits with driving growth, both personally and professionally.
When he's not optimizing campaigns, Jody keeps a diverse set of interests. He prioritizes staying active and on-the-road, whether that's hiking, working out, or simply taking long drives. He's also drawn to poker, finding the psychology behind the game "really fascinating."
One of his more recent pursuits is gardening. Jody had a yard full of plants and flowers he'd never paid much attention to until a few years ago, when he started getting more hands-on with pruning, landscaping, and experimenting with fertilizer to see the effect on plant health. The payoff has been worth it. "The leaves are healthier, the flowers look stronger," he said. "There's something about seeing that life thrive, seeing the garden grow, that is really rewarding for me."
Jody also dabbles in DIY projects around the house, tackling repairs and small improvements as they come up. He credits an unexpected tool for helping him through the trickier jobs: ChatGPT. "When you come across a problem, you just take a picture of it, upload it, and be like, 'Hey, what do you suggest?'" he said.
For Jody, it's just one more example of how AI has reshaped the way he approaches things. "AI LLMs have changed the game for literally everything," he said.
Please join me in extending the biggest congratulations to Jody, PulsePoint’s July 2026 inductee into the PulsePoint Trader Hall of Fame.
